A great Pre/Post excursion option for your Alaskan Cruise vacation.

There are no road signs marking the entrance to this part of the Chugach State Park. Most locals don’t even know about this wild scenic area. Adventure seekers do not need to travel many miles out of town searching for a true Alaskan backcountry riding experience. This awesome trail winds through the northern reaches of the Pacific Coastal Temperate Rainforest about ½ way between Anchorage and Girdwood. The Girdwood 3-hour tour includes a hike downhill to a spectacular waterfall where salmon come to spawn from mid-June through September. During this time there is a very good chance of seeing bears from the overlook fishing in the river below, and foraging in the high alpine meadows above.

Trailhead Check-in is on Konikson Road, Anchorage Alaska

Alaska has come a long way with our technology but for this location…GPS systems do not always work AND the trailhead does not have an address, the park service is working on it, just not there yet. For the most accurate results using maps use the Essential One station in Bird Creek, from there you are only a few minutes away. We will send you detailed driving directions.

Don’t Want to Rent a Car?

UBER/LYFT is an option. We tested this out with some of our super flexible guests in 2018. These guests agreed to take an UBER using the Essential One Station as the drop off and then asking the driver to continue to the trailhead using the driving directions we provided. In all cases the driver agreed. For the return trip you will need to be prepared to walk back to the Essential One Station for the pick-up, you can request the car as soon as you get cell reception.
