Call to Book!

Chugach Base Camp, located just south of Anchorage near Bird Creek is offering family adventure day camps throughout the summer.

June 2020 – Master Guide ATV Introduction

Designed with the entire family in mind.  Each member of the family will receive one-on -one ATV instruction in the exclusive training lot. Learn the ins and outs of basic ATV operation, basic ATV maintenance troubleshooting, what ATV’s can and can’t do, along with general trail courtesies.

Once the adults are trained and comfortable the master guide will escort the family on a loop trail, children will ride in the seat behind the adult.

This trail offers the opportunity to scope for bears, goats, Dall sheep, moose, and possible close up encounters with eagles, owls, spruce grouse, martin, otters, and other forest locals.

Upon arrival at the creek families will learn about the species of salmon that frequent the area and of course time to play near the creek and explore the area.

Returning to the training lot there will be time for refreshments, snacks, and questions about the day.

Tim Cook was an awesome guide. He went way out of his way to get my family worked into his schedule on short notice, and his effort paid dividends. The Bird Creek area scenery was breathtaking, the short hike to check out the salmon in the stream and the waterfall... read more

How to get to Chugach Base Camp

Trailhead Check-in is on Konikson Road, Anchorage Alaska. We have come a long way with our technology but for this location…GPS systems do not always work AND the trailhead does not have an address there is a map location for Bird Valley Trailhead using coordinates. For the most accurate results using maps use the Essential One station in Bird Creek, from there you are only a few minutes away. Our confirmation contains detailed driving directions.

More Information About The Area

Chugach Base Camp is located in the northernmost reaches of the Pacific coastal temperate rainforest. This is the largest temperate rainforest on the planet which begins in Northern California, traverses 2500 coastal miles and ends a short distance from our facility, Chugach Base Camp. Just across the river and visible from camp, is Taiga. Taiga is also known as Boreal or snow forest, hence the world’s largest land biome begins its journey here and sprawls all the way to Siberia.

Transportation

UBER/LYFT – We work with a local UBER & LYFT driver. Call them ahead to arrange the pick-up time and location for both your hotel and the trailhead, once they arrive on your curb/trailhead, book the UBER/LYFT.

Rental Cars – We have been recommending Vito’s Car Sales and Rental off Gambell Street in Anchorage. In 2020 they were renting sedans for $71 a day ($300 refundable deposit, guests provide their own insurance). For more information please call 907-917-3310.

Single Driver ATV

Our single driver machines are designed for one driver, these machines have one seat and four wheels, which is why they are sometimes called quads. These single driver machines are easy to operate and are either fully automatic or semi-automatic. During the orientation in our training lot, your Alaska Adventure Team guide will train you on how to operate the machine and ensure you are comfortable with the controls before we head out onto the trail.

Double Rider ATV

Designed for two full sized adults with one seat for the driver and a second seat behind the driver. These four wheeled machines are longer than a single machine to accommodate two people comfortably. Often referred to as 2-Up ATV’s, they are easy to operate and are fully automatic. During the orientation in our training lot, your guide will teach you to operate the ATV to ensure you are comfortable with the controls before we head out onto the trail.

Viking 6 Place UTV

Our Viking or 6 place machine has six seats in two rows. Your Alaska Adventure Team guide and two passengers ride in the front row. Three more passengers can ride in the back row.  These machines have six wheels and have a roll bar, allowing us to take passengers as young as 4 years old. This type of machine is often referred to as a UTV. Passengers will not need to learn how to drive this machine as it is guide driven.
