1.5 Hours

Just a short drive south of downtown Anchorage and you will enter the Northernmost point of the great Pacific Coastal Rainforest that starts in Northern California.

Book Online Now!

The largest temperate rainforest on the planet begins in Northern California, traverses 2500 coastal miles and ends a short distance from our facility, Chugach Base Camp. Just across the river and visible from camp, is Taiga. Also known as Boreal or snow forest, the world’s largest land biome begins its journey and sprawls all the way to Siberia. Immediately upon your arrival, you will find the air is clean and crisp. The sights and sounds of nature will entice your senses causing you to be eager and excited to begin your adventure.

Your Alaskan guide will meet you at the trailhead to provide each driver with an ATV/Quad orientation and training (which is part of the adventure in our expansive training site). Next, we  depart on our ATV’s or UTV’s to explore the forest on the way to the river. There will be time at the river to sightsee the area and take plenty of pictures of the raging waters, towering cottonwoods and overall natural beauty only a rainforest can provide. Along the trail, we will stop for a naturalist stroll to discover the environment even further. We will keep an eye out for moose, bears, sheep and mountain goats on the trails and high alpine meadows, and salmon in the creek.  Your guide will share details about the history of the area, local flora and fauna to include edible berries and plants as well as traditional medicinal uses. In late summer, this forest affords a fungus lovers paradise which we will also discuss as they begin to grow for the season.

The complete adventure is 1.5 hours in duration with approximately 25 minutes driving the ATV’s.
This is an easy to moderate activity.
No experience is necessary.

How to get to Chugach Base Camp

Trailhead Check-in is on Konikson Road, Anchorage Alaska. We have come a long way with our technology but for this location, GPS systems do not always work AND the trailhead does not have an address, the park service is working on it but we’re just not there yet. For the most accurate results using maps use the Essential One station in Bird Creek, from there you are only a few minutes away. We will send you detailed driving directions with your confirmed reservation.

UBER/LYFT – We work with a local UBER & LYFT driver. Call them ahead to arrange the pick-up time and location for both your hotel and the trailhead, once they arrive on your curb/trailhead, book the UBER/LYFT.

Rental Cars – We have been recommending Vito’s Car Sales and Rental off Gambell Street in Anchorage. In 2019 they were renting sedans for $70 a day.
